With the news that Trevor Daley is good to go for tomorrow’s game against Tampa, the Wings needed to make a roster move in order to activate Daley from the Injured Reserve.
The Red Wings have decided to send defenseman Libor Sulak to Grand Rapids.
The Red Wings signed the 24-year-old undrafted defenseman to a contract in 2017 and this is his first professional season in North America after spending the 2017-18 season with Pelicans of the Finnish Liiga. Sulak finished this NHL stint with 0 points and 6 penalty minutes in 6 games.
As veteran defensemen get healthy, prospects like Sulak will be sent to Grand Rapids where they’ll be crucial pieces on the Griffins blueline that currently features two players on PTOs. Sulak showed flashes of what he can bring at the NHL level, with his speed and ability to jump up on the rush exciting fans. Time in Grand Rapids will help his development as he gets plenty of playing time and more used to North American ice without being thrown into the fire.
Why not send Luke Witkowski down instead, some may ask? Well, with Sulak going down to Grand Rapids, Joe Hicketts can now slot into the lineup instead of being scratched and Witkowski can be the scratch instead. If that scenario does unfold, look for Hicketts to be paired with Nick Jensen on the third pair.
