Traverse City recap: Wings shutout Rangers en route to championship game

In an action-packed game, newly-signed Czech goalie Patrik Rybar picked up the shutout for the Red Wings prospects in a 5-0 win. This win puts them in the championship game, likely against the Columbus Blue Jackets. That result is subject to change as the Jackets still have a game to play. This high-scoring and skilled Rangers team had just come off a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild but proved to be no match for the Wings team that is now on a roll headed into tomorrow’s championship game. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11th.

The first period was relatively quiet as it ended 0-0, but the Wings had plenty of opportunities to score, going 0-3 on the power play.

The second period is where things became lopsided in the Red Wings favor, with Axel Holmstrom getting the scoring started off a juicy rebound from a Jared McIsaac shot.

Next to score was Joe Veleno on the power play on a snipe from the top of the left circle. Dennis Cholowski got the lone assist on the goal.

The final Red Wing to score in the second period was Zach Gallant, who got rewarded for his stellar PK work.

The third period started off with a twist, as Red Wings prospect Givani Smith and Rangers prospect Dawson Leedahl started the period off in their penalty boxes, as they were exchanging words and slashes before the period started. Later on in the period, the two fought.

Shortly after Givani Smith’s decisive win, Red Wings 2017 1st rounder Michael Rasmussen scored a goal on the power play. Joe Veleno and Filip Zadina assisted on the goal.

The final goal of the game belongs to Joe Veleno, assists to Zach Gallant and David Pope.
