The Detroit Red Wings on Monday announced the signing of their 2016 6th round pick, prospect goaltender Filip Larsson to a 3-year entry level contract. Larsson, 20, just completed his freshman season at Denver where he led the team to a Frozen Four appearance.
Red Wings fans really started to keep an eye on Larsson when he came over to the USHL with the Tri-City Storm and started dominating right away. He ended up earning USHL goaltender of the year honors. He gets to college where fans and scouts alike are wondering how he’ll adjust after such a good season and even though he got a late start due to injury, he didn’t disappoint. Larsson finishes his college career with a 13-6-3 record, 1.95 GAA, .932 SV%, and 4 shutouts in 22 games.
Larsson earned NCHC Goaltender of the Month honors in December and NCHC Goaltender of the week honors twice. He was also named to the 2019 NCHC All-Rookie Team and a finalist for the NCHC goaltender of the year award as a freshman.
The Red Wings minor league goalie situation becomes a lot more interesting with this signing in the sense it could create even more competition next season. Patrik Rybar in Grand Rapids is an RFA and Harri Sateri and Pat Nagle are UFAs. Next season we could see Rybar and Larsson in Grand Rapids and Nagle and Kaden Fulcher in Toledo.
