Immediately following the 3-2 win over Ottawa on Dennis Cholowski bobblehead night, the Red Wings have announced that they’ve sent Martin Frk and Dennis Cholowski to Grand Rapids.
Cholowski, 21, has 7 goals and 9 assists for 16 points in 56 games. Cholowski started off hot with 9 points in his first 16 games and has cooled off since as he adjusts to the NHL game. Cholowski has been a healthy scratch for two games in a row, including on his bobblehead night. The main concern of the coaching staff is they feel that Cholowski’s defensive play has been lacking and he could benefit from time in Grand Rapids to regain confidence and further improve his game.
Most Red Wings fans are very mad at the idea of Cholowski being forced out of the lineup and down to Grand Rapids especially 11 days before the trade deadline and 6 points away out of the cellar. The Wings are one of the oldest teams in the league and have the second highest payroll in the league and can’t find room for two NHL caliber prospect defensemen on the roster in Filip Hronek and Dennis Cholowski. On top of that, the Red Wings don’t currently have a timeline set in stone as to when they’ll be recalling Cholowski. A team that started the season with 6 rookies in the opening night lineup is now down to just one. There are plenty of reasons to be mad at the handling of Hronek and Cholowski in a rebuilding year, but it is a positive sign for the future of the team that they’ve played as well and as long as they have at the NHL level this season.
Looking for some more positives, the Griffins play 5 games between now and the deadline and Cholowski will surely be playing more minutes than he’s received in Detroit as of late. The Griffins are absolutely loaded right now with the additions of Frk and Cholowski and will be able to roll out new combinations that teams have yet to prepare for, even though Cholowski and Frk both have been well scouted by now.
