Perhaps the most widely unexpected new face in the lineup this season is 22-year-old left-handed Swedish forward, Christoffer Ehn. Ehn, the Wings’ 4th round pick in 2014, is the latest graduate of a powerhouse known for developing talent, Frölunda. And for those who’ve watched Frölunda hockey the past couple seasons, it’s no surprise that Ehn has made it to the NHL.
Ehn’s former coach in Frölunda, Roger Ronnberg, has had a positive impact in the development of several current and future NHLers. John Klingberg and Mattias Janmark (DAL), Andreas Johnsson and Carl Grundstrom (TOR), Alexander Wennberg (CBJ), Artturi Lehkonen (MTL), Jacob Larsson (ANA), Rasmus Dahlin (BUF), and Lias Andersson (NYR) among them.

From the Scouts

From Jiri Fischer via Ansar Khan of Mlive in April of 2017:
“Jiri Fischer, who works in Red Wings player development, said last year of Ehn: ‘He’s not afraid to try to beat guys one-on-one. He was certainly very good at the U18 World Championships. That’s one of the reasons he caught our scout’s eye. On the faceoffs and in battles, once he gets stronger, he’ll be fantastic.'”
From Jeff Blashill via Dana Wakiji of DetroitRedWings.com in September of 2018
“Wings coach Jeff Blashill said he expects Ehn to be in the lineup Thursday night when the Wings host the Columbus Blue Jackets.
“That one probably surprised me a little bit,” Blashill said. “I said to (general manager) Ken Holland last week I want to make sure we have four lines that I can play and trust and we can put any line out there against anybody at any time and I want to make sure we have a momentum line and a line … I talked to Kris Draper lots about his old line and Scotty (Bowman) used them in a lot of different ways, sometimes it was against the other team’s best, sometimes it was to create momentum off the opening face-off, all that kind of stuff.
“With Ehner, over the course of six or seven exhibition games he’s really shown he knows how to play the right way, knows how to manage his game. He went up against some of the best players in the world and one-on-one handled (Pittsburgh’s Evgeni) Malkin pretty good. I think he’s a real good player who skates well. Again, it’s an everyday league and we’ll see, but so far he’s made a real good impression. I think he’s got some offensive ability, he showed that on the seam pass he made yesterday to Turgeon. I’m excited about where he’s at.”

Highlights

This is one of Ehn’s two assists in six games during the preseason. Ehn displayed his good vision with the pass that led to a shorthanded goal. In this game against Toronto, both teams played more AHL caliber players than their game the previous night in Toronto.
In this highlight, you can see Ehn use his speed to get to an open area of the ice and that led to a goal. His speed is a big part of his game and he’ll have even less ice to cover, as international rinks are bigger than the standard NHL rink.

Past Stats

alt
As you can see, Ehn’s stats show an improvement season after season. From his 2014-15 season to his 2015-16 season, you can see his game and point totals rise in the all three of the SuperElit, Allsvenskan, and SHL leagues. In fact, Ehn played in 16 playoff games in 2015-16 during Frölunda’s championship run.
In 2016-17, Ehn spent his first full season in the SHL and followed that up with a strong 2017-18 season in which he further refined his game and became even more reliable. It was his best season statistically in the SHL, even with Joel Lundqvist, former Grand Rapids Griffin Jan Mursak, and Rangers prospect, Lias Andersson, as the team’s top three centers.

Role In The Lineup

Ehn played strictly center with Frölunda but is versatile enough to where he’ll be able to fit in on the wing if need be on the fourth line and is also very used to a penalty-killing role. His game will bring a different look to the fourth line that Coach Blashill hopes will allow him to match the fourth line up against any line he wants.
Even if he doesn’t stay up the whole season, he has the potential to be a permanent fixture on the fourth line down the road as long as he keeps improving day in and day out. It’s up to him to make that happen, but he has all the tools needed to stay in that role as the game gets younger and faster.
