WINGS POST-GAME: Zadina Scores His First Goal, But Wings Drop Eighth Straight Game

5 years agoThe Red Wings have been on quite the slide lately, but they were hoping to turn around their fortunes tonight against their former rivals – the Colorado Avalanche.
Unfortunately, they would eventually lose the game 4-3 in overtime, but the final score of the game won’t be remembered. Instead, this game will be known as the one where the 6th overall pick from 2018 scored his first ever goal in the NHL.
Yes, the moment is Filip Zadina’s and he’s earned every bit of it. The 19-year-old has played better and better in every game and, in a season that is all but in the bag for the Red Wings, his future potential is on full display. It’s a sign of hope and something to look forward to. I can’t wait to see more.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- The greatest highlight of the night is Zadina’s goal. It didn’t come until late into the 3rd period and was on the power play. At the time, it looked like the game winner. Alas, the Avs would tie it up a mere minute later. Still, this moment belongs to Zadina.
- Jonathan Bernier played a great game, turning away 30 of 34 shots.
- The Wings second goal was a beautiful tic-tac-toe by their fourth line. A little unexpected? Maybe. But you can’t deny how good the puck movement was.
- This is now the longest losing streak of the Wings season. Will be nice to see them win again at some point.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Wings took the lead three times in this game and three times they gave it up. It would be nice to attribute this to how good the Avalanche are, but this one is all on the Red Wings not being able to buckle down defensively. Their young rookie gave them the opportunity to win the game with less than three minutes left and they couldn’t close it out for him. Talk about teamwork and culture… they need to close that out for him.
Tonight was all about Zadina. He played a great game all night and was rewarded with the power play goal in the dying minutes of the third. There’s nothing but excitement from me on this young prospect. I can’t wait to see him playing full time in the winged wheel.
