In the second game of their weekend back-to-back, the Red Wings hosted one of their division rivals, the Florida Panthers. The Panthers are in the thick of a standings race, so this was a big game for them, and the Red Wings were coming off a strong game last night against the Pittsburgh Penguins where they lost in overtime.
Tonight’s game was another to file away in the ‘L’ column, but the Wings definitely built on their game from last night. They played well, with lots of fire, but their defensive breakdowns weren’t enough to stave off the Panthers. The final score was 4-1, with the final goal being an empty-netter.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • It wasn’t a great first period for the Wings. They were out-shot 14-6 and scored on twice. But they came back strong in the second period, out-shooting the Panthers at 5-on-5 and in all situations and scoring a goal.
  • The goal scored was a beauty by Dylan Larkin. Darren Helm hit him with a beautiful pass as he came out of the box, springing him on a breakaway, where he used his quick hands to beat Sergei Bobrovsky. It was Larkin’s 100th goal of his career.
  • Filip Hronek was not liking the Panthers tonight. He picked a fight with Vincent Trocheck after a clean hit, ending up with a 5-minute major for fighting, a 2-minute minor for instigating, and a 10-minute misconduct. Him and Trocheck went back and forth at each other all night.
  • Speaking of penalties, this game was chalk full of them. It felt like at all times, one of the two teams was shorthanded. The Panthers had 19 PIMs and the Red Wings had 27.
  • Valtteri Filppula left the game in the second with a lower-body injury. He did not return.
  • Both goalies played fabulously tonight, really making the game an exciting one. Jimmy Howard turned away 34 shots and Bobrovsky stopped 27. They were really exciting saves, too. It was a good game on the whole.

There were great scoring chances, there was bad blood… Overall, this was a really entertaining hockey game.

MOTOR CITY MVP

Dylan Larkin for scoring his 100th career goal and putting his body on the line night in and night out, but I’m giving an honourable mention to Filip Hronek, who played with lots of fire and passion tonight. Was nice to see from both of them.
