This game got ugly fast. At least it didn’t happen until the 3rd period, though.
Periods one and two were pretty palatable hockey, though with very little conversion. The Wings tried to stem the bleeding from their losing streak, but the Flames rose higher and the fire got bigger. The final score was 5-1.

THOUGHTS AND HIGHLIGHTS

  • The game started okay, it really did! Anthony Mantha and Dylan Larkin were creating scoring chances. Andreas Athansiou was buzzing. Calgary struck first late in the period, but all things considered the Wings weren’t in too bad of shape.
  • The second period was also pretty good. Calgary widened the gap to 2-0, but Darren Helm brought the Wings within one minutes later, tapping in a loose puck that Rittich couldn’t hold onto after a Mantha breakaway.
  • Best part of that goal was the beautiful pass from Dennis Cholowski to Mantha.
  • The game really got away from them in the third period. Milan Lucic stripped Alex Biega of the puck and fed it to Sam Bennet in front who made no mistake burying it past Jimmy Howard. Then, mere minutes later, Lucic was around the net again contributing to a Derek Ryan goal.
  • That’s when things really went off the deep end. Darren Helm retaliated to an uncalled elbow to his head on Hampus Lindholm. Helm’s slash to the back of Lindholm’s legs earned him a five minute major and game misconduct. The Flames scored on the ensuing power play to make it 5-1.
  • Yes, I know it was a slash. It looked like a crosscheck to me at first.
  • The Red Wings went 0/2 on the power play and 2/5 on the penalty kill, so special teams continue to be their downfall.

MOTOR CITY MVP

Dennis Cholowski had a pretty good game. He had a very pretty assist. He’s one of the few players who stood out.
I’m at a loss for who else it could be, tbh.
