It’s been nine games and 24 days since the Red Wings last won a game. These are the kinds of losing streaks that make one feel hopeless. But obviously the Red Wings didn’t feel too hopeless tonight. It was a rocky game, but they eventually escaped victorious, beating the team that kicked off this nine game losing streak, the Buffalo Sabres, in a shootout by a score of 4-3.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • After over 133 minutes of not scoring a goal, Dylan Larkin finally put the Red Wings up on the scoreboard at 4:23 of the first period.
  • Larkin (of course) scored AGAIN (obviously) with mere seconds to go in the period to put the Red Wings up by two. D-boss really had the snip show going tonight.
  • Between those two goals, Red Wings legend Scott Wilson tied the game at one, but Jeff Blashill (obviously) challenged it for goaltender interference and HE ACTUALLY WON THE CHALLENGE. It is fair to say that after the first period, everything was really coming up Red Wings.
  • Nothing happened in the 2nd period.
  • The 3rd period. Oh boy. This is where things got interesting. Buffalo scored two unanswered goals (one of which was by Scott Wilson) to tie the game up. It was a classic Red Wings collapse.
  • Then, Tyler Bertuzzi scored on the power play to regain the lead!
  • Then, the Red Wings collapse became even more classic when they gave up a goal in the final minute of the period! Oh boy, what a rollercoaster.
  • OT brought nothing, but Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou scored in the shootout to drive this one home. Our first win in 9 games!
  • Jonathan Bernier continued his excellent season with 29 saves on 32 shots for a .906 save percentage.
  • Gustav Lindstrom made his NHL debut tonight with just over 12 minutes of ice time, including half of a minute on the power play. He took one penalty and finished as a minus-1.

In the second half of the 3rd period, Obi-Wan is literally everybody and Anakin is Red Wings fans.

MOTOR CITY MVP

I feel like every time I write one of these the player of the game is Dylan Larkin.
But it’s Dylan fucking Larkin.
