Rolling into Vegas on a Saturday night, you never really know what you’re going to get. For the Red Wings, a team with nothing to lose at this point of the season, they put their heads down and laid it all on the table. Unlike most who roll into Vegas on a Saturday night, they won big. The final score was 3-2.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Jimmy Howard turned aside 28  Golden Knights shots en route to his 20th win of the season.
  • Taro Hirose recorded his third point in as many games. The NCAA left winger appears to be a solid addition to a struggling Red Wings team late in the season. It will be very interesting to see him in training camp next year.
  • Andreas Athanasiou assisted on two goals – Luke Glendening’s and Anthony Mantha’s – to bring his assist total on the year to 20. I’d be very surprised if he didn’t crack 50 points this season.
  • Anthony Mantha scored twice to snap a six game goal drought. His first was a beauty of a shot on the power play that came late in the game and tied it up. The second was a finish in OT that was set up beautifully by Dylan Larkin.
  • Dylan Larkin is amazing. What a beautiful pass.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Wings needed this win. Plus, it came at the expense of a playoff team, which will add even more to their confidence. Plus, it was led by young developing players, which brings even more hope for fans and players. There are lots of positives to winning this late in the season, least of which that it makes the team watchable.
Losing all the time sucks and it really wears down the players. Tanking is not a winning strategy.
