After a heartbreaking loss in Toronto last night that saw Henrik Zetterberg literally bleed for this team, the Red Wings were off the Boston to cap off their five game road trip. The team went from the West Coast to the East Coast in the last week and this would be their second back-to-back in four days. It was a game that they needed to win if they wanted any hope of a playoff dream to stay alive. Unfortunately, tired minds, hearts, and legs prevailed as they dropped the game by a score of 6-1.
The Rundown
The Wings seemingly got off to a decent start, controlling possession for the first half of the first period. Unfortunately, a David Krejci goal at 11:07 of the first opened the floodgates. The Bruins added two more goals in the next two and a half minutes. After this barrage of offense, Jared Coreau was yanked from the net and replaced with Petr Mrazek. It didn’t matter for the Bruins, though as Krejci would add one more to make it 4-0 in favour of the Bruins going into the second period.
The second period wasn’t as bad for the Red Wings. They managed to get off eight shots to the Bruins ten. Still, the Bruins dominated the possession game and added another goal to their tally from Brad Marchand. The Red Wings responded less than a minute later when Kronwall drove home a slapper from the point.
Early in the third period, David Pastrnak would end another goal for the Bruins and 6-1 would end up being the final score. The Wings did outshoot the Bruins in the third period, but their inability to get the puck past Tukka Rask would be their downfall. They even had a couple of powerplays late in the game, but they just couldn’t get it home, but the five goal deficit was just too much of a hurdle for them to jump.

The Stats

The Bruins proved in this game why they have the 2nd best on-ice 5v5 CF% in the league. They dominated the possession game and the goals followed. This game was proof of the fact that the Red Wings cannot compete with playoff teams. Their inability to convert chances is a real problem, but they need to be getting the puck into the opponent’s zone and actually take shots in order to create chances. That simply was not happening here.

Motor City MVP

Tonight’s Motor City MVP is Robbie Russo. In his second NHL game, Russo played a total of 16:09 and led team defensemen with a 50% on-ice CF% (all situations). It’s a little weak, but the team tonight did not have much to brag about.
