It was a long break. The All-Star Break + the bye week made for a nine day break between hockey games. The Red Wings had a busy December, so they really needed the rest. And they put it to good use, defeating the Maple Leafs in a 3-2 overtime victory tonight.

THE HIGLIGHTS

  • The game started very late on account of the team retiring Red Kelly’s #4 at Little Caesars Arena. Kelly played as a defenseman for the Red Wings and a center for the Maple Leafs, winning eight Stanley Cups over the course of his career. It takes a lot for the Red Wings organization to retire a number, so this is a great honour for the Production Line great Kelly.
  • Gustav Nyquist opened the scoring finishing a beautiful play by putting the puck into an empty net.
  • Dylan Larkin’s go ahead goal was probably the best of the night. He found the perfect spot for the puck, pushing the Red Wings into the lead and giving them the chance to finish off the Leafs.
  • The Leafs obviously tied up the game late in the 3rd period. Because the Red Wings don’t hold on to 3rd period leads.
  • Danny DeKeyser scored the OT winner. LOL.

FINAL THOUGHT

Both teams looked pretty sloppy tonight, but it was nice seeing the Wings steal a win against one of the best teams in the league. Larkin looked great, Athanasiou looked okay, but Jimmy Howard was a beast. Again.
Once again, goaltending saved the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard is a true All-Star. Much love.
