The Wings rolled into St. Louis tonight to play the playoff-bound Blues. The Wings season is pretty much over, so they’re basically just playing for fun at this point. That being said, these games do not feel like fun when the team continues to lose. Tonight, though the game was more close than most recently, they lost to St. Louis by a score of 5-2.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The score does not reflect how close the game was. Detroit had 22 shots to St. Louis’ 24. They had 45 shot attempts at 5-on-5 to St. Louis’ 42. They actually played a pretty good game and had a couple of bad breaks on goals, including the 5th goal which was an empty-netter.
  • Thomas Vanek scored twice, bringing his goal total for the season to 16. Actually not bad for a veteran of his age who’s missed significant time to injury. A few more games and he could have hit 20 goals.
  • Taro Hirose recorded another assist tonight on Vanek’s first goal. That’s his second point in as many NHL games. Pretty impressive for the NCAA grad.
  • Jonathan Bernier didn’t have a great night, allowing 4 goals on 22 shots. He’s had a good stretch lately, but tonight was not part of it.

FINAL THOUGHT

It’s nice that Hirose is bringing some excitement to the end of the Wings season. I would still like to see at least one of Larkin or Athanasiou hit the 30-goal mark, but with every passing game, it seems to get less and less likely. I guess it’s something to keep watching for through the end of the season.
