WINGS POST-GAME: Red Wings Collect A Point In Shootout Loss To Sabres

5 years agoOn the second half of their Thanksgiving weekend back-to-back, the Wings pushed the Buffalo Sabres to the seventh round of a shootout before finally dropping the game. The final score was 3-2 as the Wings managed to collect one of a possible four points this weekend.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Wings got off to a bad start as Jeff Skinner scored less than four minutes into the first period to give the Sabres an early lead.
- Future Captain Dylan Larkin eventually tied the game in the second as he fired the puck on net from an odd angle. From Anthony Mantha and Justin Abdelkader, it was Larkin’s 9th goal of the season, putting him on pace for 32 goals.
- Mantha scored his 7th of the season in the 3rd period to tie the game at 2.
- The Wings allowed no goals at 5v5 tonight. Both Sabres goals were scored on the power play, giving the Wings a 50% penalty kill percentage. They went 0-for-4 on the power play.
- Andreas Athanasiou scored the Red Wings lone shootout goal in the 5th round. Frans Nielsen, Thomas Vanek, Gustav Nyquist, and Larkin all missed on their attempts before him. Unfortunately, Sam Reinhart got the last laugh with his goal in the 7th round.
FINAL THOUGHT
The Wings are playing far too many extra frames this year. These one goal games are exactly what plagued them last year, further proving the team’s need for a game breaking elite goal scorer. Until that player comes along (and who knows – maybe he’s already in Grand Rapids), we’ll be left with our stomachs churning through overtime periods and shoot outs.
But hey – at least we got a point tonight!
