After blanking the New Jersey Devils 3-0 on Monday night, the Wings hit the ice again on Tuesday night to take on the Philadelphia Flyers. They were back on home ice and Petr Mrazek would get his second start in a row after a 37 save shutout the night before. Luke Glendening made his return and Jonathan Ericsson scored a goal as the Wings dropped the game in overtime by a score of 3-2.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

The Wings opened the scoring about halfway through the first period when Jonathan Ericsson fired a puck past Brian Elliott. Luke Glendening assisted in his first game back from a hand injury.
The Flyers dominated the second period, scoring to tie the game in the first minute on a goal by Andrew MacDonald.
They took the lead with a goal in the last minute of the period too, on a play that Jeff Blashill challenged for goaltender interference. The overhead view showed no signs of goaltender interference, so the goal counted and Philly closed out the second period with a 2-1 lead.
Detroit would tie it up in the third as Frans Nielsen banged in a loose puck in the slot.
Regulation would end in a tie and the game would go to overtime where the Flyers’ Travis Konecny ended it a mere 27 seconds in. There was a question about whether the play was offside, but the refs ultimately ruled that it was a good goal.

THE STATS

alt
Ultimately, Detroit’s second period is what killed them. They were out-shot 13-5 and out-attempted 22-12 at 5v5. There is zero chance of winning a game with play like that. They bounced back big time in the third, though, with double the amount of shot attempts that Philadelphia had. Tyler Bertuzzi was outstanding as he had two chances on empty nets but flubbed on the puck. If he’s accurate on either of those chances, this game is over in regulation.
Unfortunately, you can’t rely on puck luck to win you games. Detroit needs to hit the net more with their shots if they expect to escape with more goals.

MOTOR CITY MVP

Tonight’s Motor City MVP is Luke Glendening who, in addition to returning to his penalty kill duties, got two assists as Detroit forced the Flyers to overtime. Glendening missed some time with a hand injury, but was an impact player for the team on his return.
