Wings Post-Game: Double Goals For Double-A in 3-2 Loss To Canadiens

5 years agoThe Wings were looking to take advantage of a tired Canadiens team tonight and put themselves back in the ‘W’ column, but the Habs had other plans. They strolled into Little Caesars Arena and stole the game by a score of 3-2.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- After pretty dull first period, the Habs opened the 2nd with a goal a mere 30 seconds in and followed it up with another 33 seconds later.
- They also scored 19 minutes into the third period. Needless to say, the Wings did not start the periods very well. They were coasting.
- In both cases, though, they did respond. Well, Andreas Athanasiou responded, scoring twice: once in the 2nd and one in the 3rd. Both goals were beautiful snipes from the right faceoff circle and the second one was on the powerplay.
- The Wings had 5 powerplay opportunities, but only converted on one. After the easy goals they allowed to open each period, this was their biggest downfall.
FINAL THOUGHT
The Habs played last night and, due to flight delays, didn’t get into their hotel until 4 A.M., yet until the final minutes of the game it looked like it was Detroit that didn’t get much sleep last night. The early period collapses left the Wings to chase this game and, outside of Athanasiou and Dylan Larkin, it didn’t look like they had the energy for chasing.
Athanasiou was impressive tonight. After his second goal, you could tell that he was hungry for the hat trick and he got close a couple of times. Unfortunately you can’t rely on a single player to tie and then win a game. And the rest of the team wasn’t up to the task tonight.
