With the Bruins in town, the Red Wings looked to continue to build on their current hot streak. Despite chasing the puck for most of the game, the Wings managed to collect another two points as they inched closer to a wild card spot.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • After a pre-game scare, Dennis Cholowski was cleared to start despite an upper-body injury. He played a great game.
  • Jimmy Howard played fantastic, posting a .944 save percentage. Both goals that the Bruins scored were kind of garbage. The first was actually banged in by Tyler Bertuzzi and the second was a redirect in front of the net. Howie’s been a rock for this team on this hot streak.
  • After scoring on his own net, Bertuzzi scored on the opposition as well. He followed up this goal with two blocks and a beautiful set-up for a Jacob De La Rose shot that rang off the crossbar.
  • The Wings were trailing once again in the third period but managed to tie it off a beautiful play by Gustav Nyquist. It was finished perfectly by Andreas Athanasiou for his 6th of the season.
  • Overtime went back and forth a little bit before Athanasiou netted his second goal of the game and sent the Bruins home.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I’m not quite sure what to make of these Red Wings. 21 games into the season and they are a stone’s throw away from a wild card spot. I find it concerning that they have to keep coming from behind to win these games, but I find it encouraging that they aren’t giving up. There’s a quiet confidence about them not throwing the towel in when they fall behind.
I think that Dylan Larkin, Cholowski, Athanasiou, and Bertuzzi had great games. I also think that Nyquist was fantastic not just tonight, but almost every game this season. He is not getting the credit that he deserves as he performs under the shadow of the young kids.
The Wings have two tough opponents coming up this weekend, but they’ve been playing such fun hockey that I can’t wait to watch!
