WINGS POST-GAME: Bad Time In Beantown

5 years agoIn an afternoon matinee game in Boston, Massachussetts, the Wings played in their fifth game of the 2018-19 season. The team walked into Boston without a win yet and they walked out of Boston still without a win. They lost 8-2 to the powerhouse Bruins.
WORTH MENTIONING…
- Danny DeKeyser exited the game in the opening minutes of the game. The Fox Sports Detroit team caught video of DDK nursing his hand after a play in front of Jonathan Bernier. The team has labeled DeKeyser’s injury as “upper-body” and more details will be released shortly.
- David Pastrnak embarrassed a few different Red Wings en route to his second career hat trick. The second goal he scored was the 100th of his career.
- Filip Hronek scored his first NHL goal on a powerplay early in the third period. There was some confusion around whether the goal was his or Michael Rasmussen, but it was ultimately credited to Hronek who will surely benefit from this with some additional confidence.
- The vets had a really bad game. Three of the goals against could be tied directly back to Frans Nielsen and Thomas Vanek. The two of them specifically had very bad games.
- Dylan Larkin scored a short-handed goal late in the game. It was his third goal of the season and fifth point. Especially in the second half of the game, Larkin seemed like he was playing with a chip on his shoulder.
- Jonathan Bernier had a tough game. The Bruins forwards completely exposed the Red Wings young D with their east-west passes and one-timers. Bernier’s save percentage is listed as .795, but he was left out to dry on several occasions. He has to have a couple of those, but no goalie could stop the puck with the way the Bruins were moving it around. I actually thought he had an okay game.
FINAL THOUGHTS…
The Wings need a win very soon. Not for the standings or the playoffs, but for their own morale. They have a lot of young players on the roster and you don’t want them getting too down on themselves so early in their careers. That can be damaging.
That being said, I’ve thought the young ‘D’ have actually been pretty good. Hicketts had a rough game, but Sulak and Hronek both played well. More games and more experience will do wonders for them, but something is going to have to give when the vets start to make their returns. Cholowski is slated to be back in the lineup on Monday.
So now we’ve seen what happens to the Wings when they face powerhouse teams like Toronto and Boston. It ain’t pretty. Monday, they’ll be in Montreal to face Tomas Tatar and the Canadiens. Hopefully we get a better performance then.
