WINGS POST-GAME: Another Loss To Montreal

5 years agoWell it wasn’t the amount of goals we’re used to seeing from the Habs, but the result was the same. It was the Wings 10th loss in their last 11 games and the 9th straight they dropped to the Montreal Canadiens. Since the trade deadline, the slope has gotten sleeper and the Wings have slid harder. The final score was 3-1, but it felt much worse than that.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- The Wings maybe held the Habs scoreless for the first half of the game, but the shots on net and shot attempts certainly didn’t make it look like it. When Max Domi finally scored to give his team the go ahead, there was a bit of a “there it is” feeling.
- The Wings played a hard, physical game. They looked better than they have as of late. But they were out-attempted 82-42 (73-35 at 5v5) and out-shot 36-21(31-18 at 5v5).
- Both goalies played amazing tonight. Bernier has really looked good his last couple of games. He turned side 29 of the 31 shots he faced, despite getting no help from his defense who were giving pucks up in front of him and neglecting to defend the front of the net.
- Andreas Athanasiou scored the Wings lone goal as he went 1-on-4 against the Habs and squeezed one past Carey Price. He really picked up his game in the last period trying to lift the Wings onto his back. Unfortunately, that’s a heavy load to carry for a young guy.
- Congratulations to Carey Price who, with this win, moved past Jacques Plante on the all-time franchise wins list.
FINAL THOUGHTS
With that loss and a Columbus Blue Jackets win, the Wings are officially and mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. I’d say it was a fun season, but it wasn’t really and we still have a few weeks to go. The past few weeks, including this game, has been particularly difficult to get through.
BUT. There are a lot of positives to look out for going forward. Filip Zadina has been fun to watch. Filip Hronek has been fantastic. Andreas Athanasiou and Dylan Larkin have really come into their own. Now, Evgeny Svechnikov is almost back and the Wings have a couple of new college free agents that may get a look this weekend. There are certainly lots of reasons to tune in for the rest of the season.
