Wings do silly move again, put Teemu Pulkinnen on waivers

Breathe in. Breathe out. React, if you haven’t already.
Okay, that was pretty silly. Just a day after losing Martin Frk to the Carolina Hurricanes, it now looks like the Wings will probably lose Pulkkinen to a new suitor, simply because of a forward log jam in Detroit.
It’s easy to feel bad for Detroit or Pulkkinen, but even a half-second of rational thought makes you realize that it’s really the fault of, well, Detroit.
There’s a few things to break down here:
  • It’s clear that Pulkkinen, who’s 24 years old, is probably better option than any of Darren Helm, Luke Glendenning, Steve Ott, and Drew Miller as NHL players.
  • Pulkkinen isn’t a bonafide star in his own right, either. Still, he’s a useful bottom-six option, good enough for Finland’s World Championship roster,  and also better than at least four other players on his team who will receive significant playing time.
  • The Wings signed Darren Helm, Drew Miller, and Steve Ott in favour of Teemu Pulkkinen
There’s no one to blame but themselves for this, but it’ll be interesting to see exactly how the Red Wings front office tries to shift the blame away from getting rid of Pulkkinen.
The best case scenario is that Pulkinnen goes unclaimed and can be assigned to Grand Rapids tomorrow, which could happen if all other 29 teams are completely satisfiedd with their roster. Also, this means that Andreas Athanasiou is far more likely to be on the opening night roster, which is better than nothing, I guess.
