WGD: Game 10: Jets @ Red Wings
By Nick Seguin
5 years agoThe Wings are in for a doozy tonight with the Winnipeg Jets coming into town. After an exciting mid-week game against the Maple Leafs, the Jets are 6-3-1 and averaging 3.10 goals-per-game. With the amount of forward and defensive depth they have, it’s no wonder they are being touted as a Cup favorite. They are easily one of the best teams in the league.
As for the Red Wings, with Christoffer Ehn returned to Grand Rapids and Jacob De La Rose joining the team, we get a brand new set of lines that are just as random as ever! Let’s have a look, shall we?
THE RED WINGS
LW | C | RW |
---|---|---|
Tyler Bertuzzi | Dylan Larkin | Darren Helm |
Andreas Athanasiou | Frans Nielsen | Thomas Vanek |
Gustav Nyquist | Luke Glendening | Anthony Mantha |
Justin Abdelkader | Jacob De La Rose | Martin Frk |
Tyler Bertuzzi has once again found himself on the top line. This time, it’s with Dylan Larkin and Darren Helm. A lot of people may lament that Helm is still on the first line, but honestly, it’s fine. He is top-3 on the team in independent shot attempts for and is fast enough to keep up with Larkin. The combination has worked just fine over the last couple of games, so they might as well keep it.
The third line is where things start to get funky as Gustav Nyquist was moved down to see if he can get Anthony Mantha going. Luke Glendening doesn’t make a ton of sense to me here. I would like to see Frans Nielsen or, even better, Andreas Athanasiou between these two. De La Rose slides into the fourth line centre position with Justin Abdelkader and Martin Frk, who’s making his return to the lineup.
On the back-end, Mike Green is making his long awaited debut and he’s doing so on a pairing with Dennis Cholowski. Of all the things to watch in red tonight, this will be the most exciting. Cholowski is going to have to learn quickly how to recover defensively when Green gets caught in a rush.
THE JETS
LW | C | RW |
---|---|---|
Nikolaj Ehlers | Mark Scheifele | Blake Wheeler |
Kyle Connor | Bryan Little | Patrik Laine |
Andrew Copp | Adam Lowry | Brandon Tanev |
Brendan Lemieux | Jack Roslovic | Mathieu Perreault |
There’s so much to be envious of here. I know that Dmitry Kulikov turned into a bit of a bust, but he really rounds out that bottom-pair of which Tyler Myers of all people rounds out. Big Dustin Byfuglien will get his time on the power play and Michigander Jacob Trouba will excite in the top-2. Josh Morrissey will look to build on his strong performance in Toronto.
On the front end, Mark Scheifele leads the team with his 5 goals and 5 assists in ten games. He’s followed Kyle Connor (4 goals, 9 points) and line mate Blake Wheeler. The bottom-6 is populated by guys like Adam Lowry, Brandon Tanev, and Matthieu Perreault. They shouldn’t have any problems shutting down the top-2 lines that Detroit is bringing forward.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Jimmy Howard vs. Laurent Brossoit
Neither of the Red Wings goalies have been impressive this season, but they are sticking with Jimmy Howard for tonight’s game. Howard’s been a victim of Detroit’s young defensemen who’s risky play is a learning experience for them, but a disaster of goals against for the goalie. He’s posted a .907 save percentage and 3.23 goals against average so far this season.
Because of their back-to-back concluding in Toronto tomorrow night, the Jets are saving their starting goalie for that. Instead, the Wings will face 25-year-old Laurent Brossoit, who’s started in two games for Winnipeg this year, posting two wins, a .955 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average.
HOW TO WATCH
Puck drop is at 7:30 P.M. EST tonight and you’ll be able to watch on NHL-N, Fox Sports Detroit and TSN3. If you are going to the game tonight, go early because traffic will be bad as President Obama is scheduled for a speaking event in the area.
