USA comes out on top against Canada for first place in WJC pool

Today at 3:30, the Americans face the host Canadians for their final round robin game of the 2017 World Junior Championship.

The stakes couldn’t be any more obvious. Win, and you’re first in the pool. Lose, and you’re… well second. 

Joseph Woll will play against Connor Ingram in net.

Opening the scoring was Colin White at 4:31 of the opening period. Just 2:34 later, the following GIF shows Jordan Greenway doubling the lead.

Thomas Chabot nabbed one back for Canada, again on the powerplay. The goal was scored at 5-on-3 after Luke Kunin’s major for interference and Charlie McAvoy’s tripping minor.

And in his future home rink, Leafs prospect Jeremy Bracco pushed the lead back to 2 for a final score of 3-1. 

Joseph Woll stopped 25 Canadian shots and looked every bit like his team’s #1 goaltender in this matchup.

There wasn’t too much extracurricular activity to write about in this one. Despite just 4 shots in the first period Canada ended up outshooting the Americans 26-20, but it was the special teams of the Yanks that made the difference in this one. On five other powerplay opportunities, the Canadians inability to score ended up costing them.

The Americans will find out their quarterfinal matchup after tonight’s round robin games conclude.
