The Detroit Spirit?

It won’t be long before the Detroit Red Wings will have the Saginaw Spirit renamed to something more Wings’ related. Over the past couple of days, some bits of news have trickled out concerning the OHL franchise pertaining to the Wings. Most notably Filip Hronek is officially joining the Saginaw Spirit. Just how quickly will he find his game?
We’ve talked about Hronek multiple times on this site and the trait that we keep coming back to is his ability to score on his peers. It is tough comparing his time in the Czech Republic to what he will face in North America but it will be a fascinating case study.
This is what Spirit general manager Dave Drinkill said in a press release about Hronek:
“He is an extremely talented offensive defenseman that will be a critical core piece of our team for this season, Filip has the ability and skill set to be an elite player in the OHL, and we are going to do whatever we can to make sure that he maximizes his potential while spending the season in Saginaw.”
“I know that his end goal like most players is to play in the NHL, and after being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, it is the perfect scenario for everyone involved.”
The Red Wings have signed Hronek to a three year entry level contract and have surely had some input regarding his development.
One of the key parts of the Wings front office has also bought a stake in the Spirit making the Hronek move all the more intriguing.
It makes sense considering the proximity of the two franchises and it also ensures that a pipeline can continue locally if necessary. The Wings will be tapped into their own market, whether the NHL likes it or not.
