Andreas Athanasiou in ongoing discussions with KHL teams. Unless something shifts in Detroit, indications are Athanasiou will jump to KHL.

As the Detroit Red Wings get ready for training camp, they may be without one of their best young players. Andreas Athanasiou is doing more than considering Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) offers, he is likely to play over in Russia this upcoming season.
Originally, the talk around Athanasiou going to the KHL felt like more of a negotiation tactic than anything. But as time has passed and the Red Wings have not traded anyone to clear out cap room for the player, the deal has looked less and less likely.
While a trade hasn’t been ruled out, it is interesting that no one has tried to sign Athanasiou to an offer sheet. This is the situation that calls for one and general managers have not been willing to take advantage.
This is another situation where Ken Holland has shown his cards and the situation has not gone in his favor. His best days are behind him and with this move a distinct possibility, there needs to be a resolution that satisfies Red Wings fans or the calls for his job will get worse.
