Today, news broke on Twitter dot com that the Vegas Golden Knights would be selecting Tomas Nosek off the Red Wings roster at tonight’s expansion draft. The shocking news came from none other than The Athletic’s Craig Custance:
This is a strange pick for the Golden Knights, considering Riley Sheahan, Darren Helm, Xavier Ouellet, and Petr Mrazek were all available to them. All of these players have legitimate NHL experience as opposed to Nosek who has only played a total of 17 games in the NHL. That being said, Nosek was a huge part of the Grand Rapids Griffins Calder Cup victory, putting up 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 19 games. He’d be a solid fourth liner for the Golden Knights at a very cheap price.

This selection would be great news for the Red Wings, as they’d escape the expansion draft with their current NHL roster still in place.  Why George McPhee and his team didn’t select the 25-year-old goalie with elite potential and a one-year cap hit of $4-million is quite the enigma. Maybe Ken Holland does have a side deal in place for McPhee to take Nosek, despite his assurances last week that he had none. Whatever the case may be, if Nosek is, indeed, the Red Wings loss at expansion, they should count their lucky stars. The Hockey Gods are looking out for them.
Stay tuned to WingsNation.com tonight for the official announcement.
