REPORT: Ryan Martin Staying Put In Detroit, Horcoff Likely Staying Too

4 years agoAll management changes in professional sports come with uncertainty. Will the new guy clean house? Will the old guy take his favorites with him to his new location? The Red Wings have been no exception to this with all of the shuffling happening between them and the Edmonton Oilers. When Steve Yzerman took over, it was only a matter of time until Ken Holland made his departure. Now that he’s settling in as the general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, the questions are in the air about who will follow.
One name we can cross off that list is Ryan Martin, as Sportsnet’s Mark Spector reported today that Martin is staying put in Detroit:
Martin has been an Assistant General Manager in Detroit for nine years now. His primary job has been to run the Grand Rapids Griffins and has done an admirable job, leading them to two Calder Cup Championships in 2012-13 and 2015-16. Yzerman actually tried to bring Martin with him to Tampa Bay a decade ago, so I imagine he’s pretty happy to be reunited with him. Martin will split the AGM duties with the newly hired Pat Verbeek.
What this means for Kris Draper is still to be determined, but it’s been rumoured that Tyler Wright, the Red Wings Director of Amateur Scouting, may join Holland in Edmonton. This could be a great opportunity for Draper to slide into, as he’s been of great benefit to the Wings’ last couple of drafts.
Lastly, in an interview done with Sportsnet, Holland admitted that Shawn Horcoff is likely staying in Detroit:
“I hired him (in Detroit) on the recommendation of (Kris) Draper and (Dan) Cleary. He has been a great addition. I think he and Steve will hit it off. He married a girl from Michigan, the farm team (Grand Rapids) is two hours away from his house. Life is good for Horc, and I’m sure Steve will want to keep him, because Horc is a good man.”
This is good news for the Red Wings as Horcoff has done an admirable job in training and developing Detroit’s prospects. Along with Daniel Cleary, he is getting the next wave of Red Wings ready to take the league by storm.
