Today the Detroit Red Wings announced that the signed Tomas Nosek to a two year extension. General Fanager is reporting that the deal is worth $612,500 yearly. The player came in with high expectations and saw somewhat of a down year, after coming out of the gate strongly with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Is there room for improvement?
In six games with the Red Wings this year, he had zero points, disappointing considering where some projected him at the next level. The easy thought to have after this extension, is that he replaces Joakim Andersson and what he brought to the Wings. I believe Nosek is a more skilled player than Andersson and would also provide more consistency than him as well.
Winging It In Motown had Nosek ranked in their annual top prospect rankings, they also projected with startling accuracy what type of deal he would sign after this past season.
“Nosek will likely see a call-up at some point this season when an inevitable injury goes down. I do think that at the end of his entry level deal, he will be signed to a one-year, perhaps two-year contract where he’ll be an every day Red Wing.”
Can’t hit the nail on the head any harder than that.
Additionally, MyNHLTradeRumors had him ranked at ten in their prospect rankings and had this to say about Nosek:
“An injury limited Nosek to 55 games in his AHL rookie season, but he still managed to produce 34 points despite any lingering effects of the hand injury. Nosek improved offensively in the post season scoring seven points in 12 games. Nosek may not have a high offensive ceiling, but he is a versatile player that is defensively responsible with good size. He is already 23 and close should get a look at the NHL this season and just may stick in a depth role.”
As a fringe NHL player it isn’t a bad re-signing, it’ll be tough seeing him in anything more than a bottom six role but if his current trajectory is any indication, he will get opportunities with the Wings in the near future. At that point, anything is possible.
