Okay, the title is a little misleading. The Red Wings are still in the basement of the league, but the point is they are not in last place right now. Tonight, it was one tire fire vs. another tire fire and the good guy tire fire won.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Overall, it was a pretty dull game. Both teams had their chances and all of the action happened at 5-on-5.
  • Dylan Larkin scored the first goal of the game on a sweet feed from Gustav Nyquist.
  • Luke Glendening scored twice tonight to propel the Wings to their victory. It’s definitely a weird thought experiment to imagine where the Wings would have netted out tonight without Glendening, but I’m happy for him and his success.
  • Andreas Athanasiou had a particularly good game. He assisted on both of Glendening’s goals and led the team in shot attempts.

FINAL THOUGHT

These wins don’t really matter anymore. The Wings are out of playoff contention. They don’t play again for nine days as they break for the All-Star Game and their bye week. When they come back, it will be interesting to see how coaching and management handles the kids vs. vets playing time. Who will be shut down for the year? Who will be traded? At this point, focus should be shifted to the trade deadline and then the draft. Nothing is happening for this team this season. It’s all about the future.
