Training camp brings a fresh slate for regular NHL-ers and the prospects who one day hope to be regulars. Teams cast a wide net to start camp, giving every hopeful a fair chance and they narrow it down from there.
After the Red and White scrimmage game this afternoon, the Red Wings have begun to narrow down their pool. Per Ansar Khan on Twitter, the Red Wings have cut ten players, sending six back to their junior teams and releasing four from their PTOs. The six junior players are:
Cole Fraser (D) – 2017 5th round pick – Peterborough Petes, OHL
Zach Gallant (C) – 2017 3rd round pick – Peterborough Petes, OHL
Brady Gilmour (C) – 2017 7th round pick – Saginaw Spirit, OHL
Jared McIsaac (D) – 2018 2nd round pick – Halifax Mooseheads, QMJHL
Alec Regula (D) – 2018 3rd round pick – London Knights, OHL
Reilly Webb (D) – 2017 6th round pick – Saginaw Spirit, OHL
And the four who were released from their PTOs are Justin Fazio (G), Pavel Gogolev (LW), Maxim Golod (LW) and Nicolas Guay (RW).
There aren’t too many surprises here. Many have high hopes for McIsaac, but his camp was cut short due to a shoulder injury that he obtained during the Traverse City Prospect Tournament. The plan was always for him to return to Halifax, anyways.
Regula is another intriguing prospect to watch as he’s projected to be a solid top-4 defenseman. He’ll be playing for the highly-regarded London Knights this year with (possibly) Evan Bouchard and Adam Boqvist.
To keep an eye on all of these prospects through their respective seasons, WingsNation’s own Cameron Kuom has created a handy tool that he’ll be updating with all of the most up-to-date stats. Be sure to give him a follow on Twitter and check out the tool.
The Wings have a lot of exciting prospects to continue to watch at training camp and we’ll see what they’re really made of once the preseason gets underway. In case you missed it, here are three things to watch for during the preseason.
