“Yikes!” comes in as the postgame title for this one because honestly, not much more is fitting for this game.
If you’re on #TeamTank or #LTRW or whatever other hashtag the kids have concocted up these days, the Wings only did half of a job. Picking up 1 point is good for just about nothing in this point of the season, but the Wings are pushing DANGEROUSLY close to losing the playoff streak.
If you’re Jeff Blashill, you’re happy Henrik Zetterberg scored in this one but disappointed your playoff bid couldn’t find a way to muster up the two points.
And if you’re in the middle, you’re kind of unsure how to feel about this game. Yikes!

The Rundown

The Wings started pretty slow, but miraculously, made it through 20 minutes tied at zeros for what seems like the first time in forever. Maybe they could do this!
*Narrator voice: They could not do this*
But anyway, things kept on keeping on for the Detroiters.
*ANDREAS ATHANASIOU FIGHT KLAXON*

Oh yeah, this happened in the first period.
Nothing crazy would happen in the second, right???
*ANTHONY MANTHA FIGHT KLAXON*

No seriously, Anthony Mantha fought in this one too.
Late in the second period, Henrik Zetterberg fired this BLAST into the net. Okay it wasn’t much, but they all count the same!

Ondrej Palat tied things up with just under 6 minutes remaining in the third….
Overtime solved… the game. Nikita Kucherov hit his 38th goal of the season… craziness.
The Lightning are now just one point out of the wild card, if that’s of interest to you.

The Stats

alt
Tampa needed to start this game quickly and they did just that, holding a noticeable shot attempt total of 18-10 over 20 minutes. In the second period the Wings however exploded for 22 shot attempts (18 on target!), while in the third period the battle was tied at 18. A back and forth game, to say the least.

Motor City MVP

Z scores his way into this column, since no one else seemed to be pushing too hard for it.

Up next

Sunday hockey at 12:30 against Minnesota? That’s… Wild.
See you then.
