Postgame: Blue Jackets

For the fifth time in the past six games, the Wings played in a one-goal game.
And for the fourth time in that same stretch, the Wings found themselves on the losing side of the scoreline, dropping a 5 p.m. matchup in Columbus by a 2-1 score.

The Rundown

There wasn’t much to chat about on the Wings end from this one.
Unsurprisingly, Boone Jenner sunk the puck into the net to put the Wings down 1-0 in the first for the 432nd game in a row.
Just under 7 minutes later, the Wings were back on the board, tying things up at 1. Thomas Vanek was the guy, potting it in for his 14th of the year…. on the Power Play? Three straight games with a PPG? What year is it?
Cam Atkinson then pushed this puck past Petr Mrazek in the second period. It didn’t quite look like a game winner… but here we are.

Detroit just couldn’t really get enough going offensively in this one like most nights, as they didn’t manage a single goal 5v5.

The Stats

As you can see, not exactly the ugliest effort from the wings, but there’s at four distinct phases in the game where they failed to register a shot attempt for at least four minutes at a time. Especially in a game like this, that’s probably not going to cut it.

Motor City MVP

Nick Jensen quietly stuck out in this game, posting a 55.5% 5v5 Corsi, good enough for 3rd on the team and tops among defenders. In a 2-1 game, there’s not much else to be celebrated.

Up Next

Back at it again tomorrow as the Wild faceoff against the Wings tomorrow at 3 pm.
