Mike Green Out For Remainder Of Season

Losing Dylan Larkin for a game hurts, but losing Mike Green for the remainder of the season is a much bigger pain.

I mean, at this point of the season, it doesn’t really matter. The Wings are out of it and any victories will be more for pride than anything else.

You do have to wonder what the season would have looked like with a healthy Mike Green, though. The injury that’s out with now is the same that caused him to miss the first three weeks of the season. It’s a viral infection in his neck. There are no serious long-term concerns, but the specialist he saw recommended multiple weeks rest. So at this point, you might as well shut him down.

Despite his defensive deficiencies, Green is Detroit’s best offensive D-man and the statistics reflect it. His 26 points are the most among team defensemen and the team is 20-19-4 with him in the lineup. Without him, they are 3-16-5. So, yeah, don’t expect much winning from here on out.

The silver lining of it is that Filip Hronek, who has been playing exceptionally well, will have a permanent spot on the roster for the remainder of the season. He’ll likely be bumped up to the first power play unit and played more throughout the game. He’s earned this opportunity to prove himself and, unfortunately, it has to come at the expense of Mike Green.

Green is the first Red Wing to be shut down for the remainder of the season, though it wouldn’t surprise me to see others go the same route in the coming weeks.
