The Wings chose a really bad night to put up their worst performance of the season. Three days is a long time to stew in the shame and embarrassment that comes with an 8-1 loss.
When it comes to professional sports, though, you have to learn to leave poor performances behind you and focus on what’s coming next. So the team took to the ice today for their first practice since the Montreal Massacre and it sounds like they were bag skated at the end. Well deserved.
There were a few absences on the ice, though, most notably Dylan Larkin and Mike Green, who both played on Tuesday. Green has fallen ill (probably sick from poor play) and is listed as day-to-day. He’s expected to play on Saturday.
Larkin is questionably for Saturday, though. Nobody’s quite sure what happened to him, but the quotes from practice are that he was “banged up late in Tuesday’s game”. Considering he left the game with five minutes to go after a tussle with Brett Kulak, my guess is he tweaked something in that fight.
The Red Wings Twitter account has Thomas Vanek as questionable for Saturday, but it’s more likely he’ll make his return on Tuesday against Colorado. Vanek has been out with a hip flexor injury since before the trade deadline.
Finally, there’s the seemingly permanently injured Trevor Daley, who was scratched right before the Montreal game on Tuesday. There’s no timetable for Daley’s return, though he’s listed as day-to-day with a back injury.
Though it’s never fun seeing players hurt, Daley’s injury certainly makes Jeff Blashill’s job a little easier when it comes to deciding who to ice on the blue line. Filip Hronek has been playing too well to scratch, which leaves Jonathan Ericsson and Daley as the odd-men out. Now with Daley’s injury, Blash doesn’t have to make that decision.
The Red Wings are back in action Saturday night against the Arizona Coyotes.
