Hey, Johnny Park! Spencer Foo made a decision and it’s not the Red Wings

Last week, it was reported that free agent forward Spencer Foo had his list narrowed down to four teams he’d like to sign with. Along with the Vegas Golden Knights, the Edmonton Oilers, and the Calgary Flames, the Detroit Red Wings were one of those teams.
It’s felt everlong, but today, Foo made a call.
Foo’s coming out of the NCAA’s Union College where he just finished a great season, putting up 62 points in 38 games on his way to being a Hobey Baker finalist. Very intelligently, Foo decided to hold off making a decision until after the dust settled from the expansion draft and the entry draft. He must have really liked what he saw from Calgary as he opted to sign a yet to be determined contract with them (will be announced July 1st).
Foo passing on the Red Wings is just another monkey wrench in the team’s plans after the tumultuous season and, so far, offseason they’ve had. It always kind of felt like a long shot that they’d get him, but stranger things have happened. According to Craig Custance from The Athletic, Jiri Fischer flew down to Edmonton and made a “first-class” pitch to Foo before the team brought him to Detroit and wow-ed him with the new arena. But, honestly, it wasn’t enough. Foo would be looking at February stars in Calgary.
Foo is a speedy 6’0” forward with a right-handed shot, something that the Red Wings, a team loaded with lefties, had enough space for. Here’s a highlight reel of his 2016-17 season to show what we’ll be missing this year:

Detroit’s got a long road to ruin ahead of them as Foo learns to fly somewhere else. If anything, this is a call to Ken Holland and Detroit management that change is needed if they want to attract top-end talent. Times like these are not easy for Red Wings fans as the colour and the shape of the team is still up in the air, but I’ll stick around to see it through. The team will come alive at some point, but be prepared for a long wait. Much longer than Summer’s end.
