Today it was announced that Henrik Zetterberg was nominated for the Bill Masterton Trophy, an award that goes to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. Considering the potential nominees on the Red Wings, Zetterberg is definitely the right choice.
Does he have a chance to win it?
Not all of the nominees have been named and this isn’t a trophy that you necessarily excited about winning. It means that you have faced hardship of some sort and were able to overcome it. In the case of Zetterberg, he has dealt with continued injuries and at an older age he is playing some of the best hockey of his life. It is pretty darn impressive.
It is a testament to Zetterberg and what he has been able to accomplish this year that he is nominated for the award. His entire career has been an example of perseverance. You very rarely hear a complaint from Zetterberg and he has been a player that exemplifies the way the Red Wings play.
Win or lose the award, Zetterberg needs some recognition and what he has done this year has been nothing short of amazing. 60+ points in this era is tough but doing it at his age is nearly impossible. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, Zetterberg’s career is coming to an end and he isn’t going out with a whimper.
He deserves all the praise that is going to be heaped upon him.
