Dominik Bokk is part of a recent trend of solid NHL prospects coming out of Germany. He was brought up in the German hockey system and represented the country at the International level with great success. Currently, he’s playing in the Swedish Hockey League, where he just finished his first season of playing professionally with grown men.

There is a lot of growing still to go for him, but he’s panning out to be a legit NHL prospect.

Projected to go 12th overall among European skaters.

Coming up through the German hockey system, Bokk demolished his competition, putting up 71 points in 41 games in his final year in the DNL (Deutsche Nachwuchs Liga). He was tied for third for most points in the league.

From there, he made the jump to Sweden where he put up an impressive rookie campaign with Vaxjo Lakers HC of the SuperElit league. His 41 points led the team through the regular season and earned him a look at the SHL level where he put up a goal and an assists in a short 15 game stint.

Internationally, Bokk represented Germany at the U18 World Junior Championship in 2016-17 where he put up a staggering 10 points in 5 games. At the U20 tournament in 2017-18, Bokk went a point-per-game. He’s among the best that Germany currently has to offer and he performs well on the big International stage.

Bokk is not the fastest skater around, but he is strong on the ice. Perhaps most impressive about his game is his nose for the net. Bokk has a good shot and is especially good with his hands. His offensive instincts are what earned him the accolades mentioned above. He creates room for himself with the puck and always knows where to find his teammates. He has a legitimate shot at being a top-6 winger in the NHL, though it will take some time as he develops the defensive side of his game.

While Bokk would add scoring depth to the Wings top-6, they have bigger needs at defense and centre rather than on the wing. Especially with Gustav Nyquist on the roster and the eventual re-signings of Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou, the team is set on the wing. If Bokk is the best player available, then the Wings should take him, but at that point of the draft, the team will likely be drafting for need and he’s just not what they need right now.
