Evgeny Svechnikov Just Underwent Knee Surgery, Expected To Miss 5-6 Months

Evgeny Svechnikov just can’t catch a break. During preseason play, he was sidelined with an undisclosed injury for an undisclosed amount of time. Both player and team have been silent on his status as the Red Wings started the season, despite Svechnikov being introduced as part of the team on opening night. Today, it was announced that Svech underwent successful surgery for his right knee and would be out for 5-6 months.

A torn ligament is no joke, so it’s nice to hear that the surgery went off without a hitch. This is a really tough break for the young winger though who struggled last season after sustaining a wrist injury in the preseason.

As the Wings’ first round selection in 2015, there was great excitement for Svechnikov even through his rough start last year in Grand Rapids where he put up seven goals and 23 points in 57 games. It was a far cry from the 20 goals and 51 points in 74 games the year before.

Despite these struggles, Svech was given 14 games in Detroit where he put up two goals and two assists. He looked pretty good in the preseason this year and was competing for a regular roster spot until this injury.

It’s a huge setback for a player who is constantly looking for some confidence. Once he’s healthy and ready to go again, he’ll be back in Grand Rapids to start this whole process over again, but that doesn’t happen for another 5-6 months.
