The new guys in town already have their new numbers.
On Twitter Thursday, the Detroit Red Wings shared numbers for six of the newest acquisitions.
Marc Staal, who was acquired in a trade with the New York Rangers, will don jersey number 18. It has been worn by 56 players in franchise history first by Gerry Couture in 1951. Most recently, Robbie Russo wore it in 2017.
Thomas Greiss, who the Red Wings inked in free agency, will wear number 29. The number was first worn in 1969 and most recently in 2020 by Brendan Perlini.
Troy Stecher, signed from the Vancouver Canucks, will wear number 70. Only one Red Wing had ever wore number 70 being Christoffer Ehn last season.
Bobby Ryan will wear number 54 after joining the club from Ottawa. One Wing had ever wore number 54, being Matt Puempel in 2019.
Jon Merrill will wear number 24 —  first worn by Fred Glover in 1951 and last by Damien Brunner in 2013.
Lastly, Vladislav Namestnikov will wear number 92 as a number that has never been donned in franchise history.
