Detroit Red Wings acquire Marc Staal, 2nd round pick for future considerations

The Detroit Red Wings have acquired defenceman Marc Staal and a 2nd round pick in the 2021 NHL draft in exchange for future considerations, the club announced Saturday.

The move comes hours after the club announced the contract extensions for Turner Elson and Sam Gagner.

Staal, 33, joins the Red Wings after spending his entire career with the New York Rangers. The rearguard was drafted by the club in the 1st round of the 2005 draft and has played in 892 games for the Rangers over his career. In those games, he’s scored 43 goals and 188 points.

This past season Staal played in 52 games scoring two goals and 11 points. In 107 playoff games, Staal has scored seven goals and 20 points.

The move appears to be a complete salary dump.  Staal has one year remaining on a six-yer deal paying him a $5.7-million AAV.
