The Detroit Red Wings are giving Bobby Ryan a chance to rebound.
The former No. 2 overall draft pick will head to Detroit for the 2020-21 season after inking a one-year deal worth $1 million.
Ryan was once a consistent 30-goal player when he was in Anaheim but his production was never the same after he got dealt to the Senators back in the summer of 2013. In his six seasons in Ottawa, Ryan hit the 20-goal plateau just once.
Last season, Ryan scored five goals and eight points over 24 games. He spent a good chunk of the season away from the team as he went through rehabilitation for alcoholism. His journey through alcoholism and return to the Senators earned Ryan the Masterton Trophy for the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
Another thing to note is that Ryan isn’t coming to the Wings as simply a depth veteran. He’ll reportedly be given a chance to play top-six minutes and rebuild his career as a marquee offensive talent.
