Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers were in town to take on the Detroit Red Wings. The Oilers have been red-hot as of late, and it doesn’t look like they are slowing down. They outplayed Detroit in the second half of the game which ended up being the difference. The Wings winning streak was stopped at 3, losing 4-3. But hey, we still get some curly fries!

Worth Mentioning

  • The Oilers didn’t get the memo that its day light savings time. They were up bright and early, striking 12 seconds in after a miscommunication between Dylan Larkin and Jonathan Bernier.
  • Detroit’s alarm clock eventually went off. A strong shift by the Wings second line managed to tie the game at one. Gustav Nyquist made a nice backhand pass to find his Swedish counterpart Jacob de la Rose for his first goal as a Red Wing.
  • Michael Rasmussen picked up an assist on the goal, extending his point streak to 3 games. He has looked much more comfortable on the ice. He is holding onto pucks longer and adding some physicality. It looks like letting him develop in the NHL was the right choice.
  • After falling down 2-1 the Wings got some major puck luck at the end of the second period. Danny Dekeyser’s point shot ricocheted off the end-boards and then the goalie’s skate.
  • Trailing by two, Tyler Bertuzzi swatted the puck out of midair to make it a one goal game in the last 90 seconds. This was his third goal in the last 4 games.
  • The late game push was to little to late. The final score was being generous. Edmonton’s 42 shots were shots were the most the Wings have conceded this season. Detroit’s 14 giveaways were a major issue that lead to multiple goals against.

Final Thoughts

The Red Wings looked more like the ones we saw to start the season. They were much more pedestrian and ust stood back and watched for long stretches of the game. Overall they were quite disorganized, as evident by the 14 giveaways.
