That Buffalo-Arizona game was crazy, right? I’m sure a lot of people’s brackets are screwed after that. Oh and there was also a hockey game tonight starring the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings.
I’m just left with one question after this game: why did we stay up to watch this?

THE RUNDOWN

The beginning of the first period found both teams just trying to get their footing into this game – a couple big hits from the Kings set the tone of an upcoming physical game.
The LA Kings know how to get under the opposition’s skin and the Wings’ skin is paper-thin right now. Frustration is clouding over this Detroit team and I’m sure they’re looking for a game to let out some emotion.
Well, that doesn’t exactly help since Paul LaDue (more like LaWho?) flutters the puck from the point off the faceoff and it ends up in the back of the net. His third goal of the season.
At this point, the Wings don’t even have a shot on goal.
The dreary mood did not last for much longer as the Wings proceeded to get a powerplay and put 7 shots on goal before the Kings could get another one – ending the first period up 7-6 in shots.
The Wings put on some good offensive pressure to start the second period, but that was met with some well-played defensive zone coverage by the Kings and they were able to stop any attack before the Wings got setup.
Of course it’s the opposite for the Kings and they were able to setup shop in Detroit’s zone leading to Trevor Daley clearing the puck over the glass for a Delay of Game penalty.
Still trailing by one through 40 minutes, the Wings just do not show any amount of effort out there. Both teams are skating through mud right now and the offensive chances show it. Slow cycles and poor defensive coverage leads to wide-open chances where I swear the forward has a couple minutes to setup their shot before a defenseman comes crawling through.
Following a weird high-sticking call at the very last moment of the second period, Gustav Nyquist scores with a diving rebound effort on the powerplay. Tied 1-1 with 19 minutes still left in this pointless game.
If it’s pointless, might as well be entertaining right? The goal that put the Kings up 2-1 with 12 minutes left in the game, was one of the flukiest goals I have ever seen in my life. I loved it so much.
On the powerplay, a bouncing puck found it’s way on top of the net and the continuing to bounce on the back of Jared Coreau. Of course it just snuck in right under the post and the goal was registered as shot behind the goal line.
I guess it was scored by Kopitar? The future-Selke/Hart winner had a lot of help on the way.
After an impressive amount of forechecking and cycle pressure, the Wings suffered on the counterattack. Leading to yet another rebound-heavy Kings goal. Tyler Toffoli in the perfect position to score on a bad bounce of the puck at the defenceman’s feet.
Blashill challenged it, but of course he was wrong and it’s still a good goal. 3-1 Kings…then 4-1 Kings with an empty net goal. This game is done.
That was hard to watch.

THE STATS

alt
It was a fairly even game – with neither team really sticking it to the other one offensively. A small surge of shots initially when the Wings conceded the first goal, but other than that everything stayed even.
With the Kings comfortably in a playoff spot and the Wings uncomfortably in the bottom-5 overall, this game was predictable. Neither team really cared or put more of an effort in than usual.

MOTOR CITY MVP

My Motor City MVP for tonight’s game was…Nyquist I guess? Scoring the only goal on a very good effort earns him the desired WingsNation Motor City MVP of Game 70.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Wings are back tomorrow night against the Anaheim Ducks – puck drop is at 10:00pm EST at the Honda Center. As always, you can watch it on Fox Sports Detroit and if you’re in Canada the game will be on Sportsnet Ontario. Getting that national coverage eh.
Brock Seguin will have the pre-game here on WingsNation and all that good stuff to prep you for a tanktastic weekend.
