WGD: Game 16: Red Wings vs. Rangers

King Hank and his band of merry men are in town tonight to face against a Red Wings team that is getting some key players back.
Both teams are currently in their own versions of rebuilds, so this might be an interesting game to watch. Currently, the Rangers are on a four-game winning streak so you never know, they can really turn on the jets against this Red Wings team.
The Red Wings are on a little streak of their own as well, having won four of the last five games, this team is on the upswing after having a historically bad start to their season.

The big news is that both Frans Nielsen and Andreas Athanasiou are back in the lineup for the Wings. They have both missed the last four games and are looking to re-establish the top-six. The line of Helm-Larkin-Mantha has been excellent so far this season – playing the most of any forwards lines so far this season and having a 56.3 CF% at 5v5 to back it up. Larkin and Mantha are both leading this team in generating offensive chances.
On the blueline, Cholowski has been technically demoted, but he was still able to have over eighteen minutes of icetime in the previous game against the Canucks. Mike Green has certainly looked a lot better than he did last season. Especially at even-strength, Green is second on the Wings blueline in CF% with 50.

This Rangers team is younger than we’re used to, but they still have some veterans to round it out. Upcoming UFA Mats Zuccarello will probably be trade deadline bait and fetch some kind of ransom. He currently has three goals and ten points in fifteen games. Young Swedish sensation Lias Andersson was called up this past week and made his season debut against the Montreal Canadiens in an exciting back-and-forth matchup.
On the defensive side of the puck, the Rangers are expensive. We get to see a familiar face in Brendan Smith on the bottom pair next to Kevin Shattenkirk – that is one pricey pair that will play under fifteen minutes tonight. Brady Skjei, Anthony DeAngelo, and Neal Pionk are the young up-and-comers for them and they appear to be getting the icetime to try it out.

Between the Pipes

Jimmy Howard is starting yet another game for the Red Wings tonight, but he is certainly being his normal self. A .917 sv% marks a big improvement from the .910 sv% we saw last year. His future is up in the air, but he is showing that he can stop pucks even behind one of the worst bluelines in the league.
Henrik Lundqvist is a future Hall-of-Famer and will be starting tonight for the New York Rangers. His .922 sv% is the highest we have seen from him since the 2012-13 season – cementing his status that he can still perform at this level. His 5.73 Goals Saved Above Average is already higher than the amount he saved all of last season, meaning that he has already been more valuable to the Rangers in 12 games than he was in 63 last season.
