WGD 73: FLYERS @ RED WINGS

The Wings are back home at the LCA and facing a familiar foe. The first game since the Petr Mrazek trade that the Red Wings will be taking on the Flyers and their old but young goaltender.
That’s not the only story brewing in Wings-land currently, they are on the worst losing streak in the modern NHL for this team. That’s bad but good for the future, I guess.
Meanwhile, the Flyers are bouncing back with two wins in a row after only winning one of their previous eight before those wins. Even before that, this Philly team won six in a row. This is the streakiest team in the NHL and it looks like they’re in the middle of another one facing the Red Wings.

It’s nice to see the young guys getting a shot at the tail-end of this season, but c’mon Blash, give the guys some icetime and let’s see what they can do. Tyler Bertuzzi has looked incredible in every game he’s been up with Henrik Zetterberg and Gustav Nyquist. Either that is a product of the talent he is paired with, or the talent that he himself brings to the table.
Martin Frk and Evgeny Svechnikov at the bottom of the lineup is not ideal this late into a pointless season. Svechnikov especially, I want to see what he can do paired with a Dylan Larkin or even replacing Nyquist on Zetterberg’s wing. A Bertuzzi-Zetterberg-Svechnikov line could be like a dad and his two toothless sons.
There is nothing really to say about this defence. Same old, same old – like really fucking old.

Converting Claude Giroux could be one of the more interesting positional storylines in the NHL today. Always cast a centreman, Giroux has been on a tear this season on the wing – already with 84 points this season. Giroux has not gone two games without a point since February 6th, a total of 20 games.
All of this while fellow forwards Jakub VorachekWayne SimmondsTravis KonecnyNolan Patrick, and Sean “forever underrated” Couturier – are there behind and doing a hell of a job supporting him.
On the blueline, this team has built a young, fast and agile group of defenceman. Ivan Provorov and Shayne Gostisbehere are two of the most exciting defenceman to watch in all of hockey right now – and they play on the same damn pairing. Radko Gudas is a shot-smothering machine, an analytics dandy if there ever was one.
Every Wings fan has to be on the Flyers bandwagon for Mrazek and that draft pick. So we might as well love all of these players and they are all just so damn loveable.

Between The Pipes

Jimmy Howard vs. Petr Mrazek
First time these two are going to be facing each other – let the fireworks begin.
This losing streak has been rough for our American boy Jimmy. A .894 sv% over his last seven starts is not the way you want to finish off a season this late in his career. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by that number. Howard has been relatively consistent behind this Red Wings team – his worst game only being a .875 sv% against the Vegas Golden Knights. He is not getting blown out like the rest of the team is.
After a hot start, Petr Mrazek has been cold as Stone Cold Steve Austin in recent games – including a game against the Blue Jackets where he got yanked after allowing 4 goals on 10 shots in the first period. His most recent game was a win against the Capitals with only a .893 sv%. I didn’t know that was possible.

Where To Watch

Tonight’s game will be brought to every television set in the nation – to see Nolan Patrick score his first hat-trick or his third multi-point game (got ’em).
Puck drop at 7:00pm EST on NBCSN to listen to Pierre McGuire talk about the Brandon Wheat Kings and Ottawa 67’s. Gotta include Hearst, Ontario too.
