The Red Wings are adding another goaltender to the free agency haul for them this year. Now, it’s Finnish netminder Harri Sateri being added to the depth chart.
Sateri played most of last year with the Panthers’ AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds. There he was able to post a very impressive .927 sv% and 2.30 GAA in 29 games. He did play nine games in the NHL this year – making his NHL debut on January 2nd of this year, he was able to perform at a somewhat inconsistent rate, but was able to get the job done. Up with the big club, Sateri had a .909 sv% and a 2.92 GAA – giving his team five quality starts is also good sign for what he will be able to do with the Red Wings.
That’s if he ever plays for the Red Wings. Seemingly now more unlikely since the report that goaltender Jonathan Bernier will also be signing with the Red Wings. Bernier has much more NHL experience and will for sure stay up with the Wings this season. Sateri would have to go through waivers, but if he was to play for the Griffins, the tandem of him and newly-signed Patrik Rybar would be a massive upgrade from Jared Coreau and Tom McCollum last season.
At age 28, Sateri doesn’t provide an injection of youth into the lineup, but he brings a steady hand to what was the Wings’ most barren position heading into this offseason. In a mere few weeks, the Wings went from only having Jimmy Howard as the only signed goalie in the whole organization, to the four crucial spots filled with quality goaltending.
