As reported by Jakub Prchal, a writer for NHL.cz, the Czech-born defenceman Libor Sulak is coming over to North America.
After signing with the Red Wings as a free agent, Sulak was loaned to the Lahti Pelicans at the beginning of the season and has put up incredible numbers on a mediocre team in the Liiga.
The Pelicans were knocked out of the Liiga playoffs just this past Saturday – losing the series 2-1 to SaiPa.
He led the league in Points/GP by defenceman with 0.76 – 9 goals and 23 assists in 42 games. He ended the regular season with 156 SOG and 307 shot attempts, averaging 3.7 SOG/GP.
You can read more about Sulak’s season in my piece from a month ago, where I go more in-depth with some of his stats and some highlight-reel goals. He’s had an even better season after I posted it.
The main question is this: Red Wings or Griffins?
The tweet posted by Prchal mentions the NHL, but would management really be so forward-thinking that they will clear a roster spot for this offensive-minded phenom for the rest of the season?
The Griffins are even more jammed up on the blueline – having to play 7 defenceman for most games.
This move does not mean that the Wings will be using the last of their call-ups. Since Sulak was loaned to the Pelicans at the beginning of this season, he does not require a call-up.
Neither does it mean that they will have too many players on their roster – after the trade deadline, the 23-man roster limit is no longer applicable.
No matter what team he plays for in the Red Wings system, Libor Sulak is sure to have an impact and fans will need to keep a close eye on his game.
Something to look forward to as this dreadful season comes to a close.
