After a 4-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings looked to bounce back against their former Central Division rival in the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday at United Center. A hot start lifted the Red Wings to a 4-0 win, as they handed the Blackhawks a loss to begin their bye week.

The Red Wings got on the scoreboard within the first five minutes, as Andreas Athanasiou made a nice pass to Dylan Larkin in the slot, who beat Jeff Glass to give Detroit the early 1-0 lead with his seventh goal of the season.

Just 2:10 later, Mike Green scored his fifth goal of the season, as he ripped a slapper past Glass off a nice dish from Anthony Mantha.

The first period ended with the Red Wings holding a 2-0 lead. The Blackhawks outattempted the Red Wings 17-12 (13-11 at 5 on 5) and had the edge in shots 10-7 (8-7 at 5 on 5).

The second period saw no additional goals, as the Red Wings held on to their 2-0 lead. A couple of turnovers nearly cost Detroit, but Petr Mrazek came up with big saves, or the defense scrambled to prevent a goal.

The Red Wings had three second-period power plays but were only able to generate four total shots.

Detroit outattempted Chicago 25-17 in the second period (Blackhawks led 14-12 at 5 on 5) and had an 11-5 shot advantage (6-4 at 5 on 5).

At the 5:46 mark of the third period, the Red Wings extended their lead to 3-0, as Henrik Zetterberg left a drop pass for Mantha, who snapped a shot past Glass for his team-leading 15th goal of the season.

With about six minutes left in the game, Tyler Bertuzzi scored his first career NHL goal, as he attempted to re-direct a Nick Jensen shot and slid the rebound through Glass’ legs to give the Red Wings a 4-0 lead.

The Blackhawks outattempted the Red Wings 32-14 (28-14 at 5 on 5) and outshot them 12-8 (11-8 at 5 on 5) in the third period.

The Red Wings were cruising to begin the game, scoring two goals and holding the Blackhawks to three shot attempts in the first half of the first period.

The teams went back and forth with the shot attempts lead, until the third period when time became an issue and the Blackhawks did their best to tie the game.

The unadjusted numbers don’t look good for Detroit because of that third period, but Martin Frk had a 58.08 score-adjusted shot attempts for percentage, which led the Red Wings, according to Natural Stat Trick.

Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill, as the Red Wings went 3 for 3 and the Blackhawks went 4 for 4.

Today’s Motor City MVP is Mantha, who had a goal and assisted on Green’s goal in the first period.

Honorable mention goes to Mrazek, who made 27 saves in the shutout effort and notched his first win since Dec. 19 against the New York Islanders.

The Red Wings face another Central Division team in the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Gametime is 7:30 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena and can be seen on Fox Sports Detroit or TSN in Canada.
