A four-goal third period highlighted the Detroit Red Wings loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. Certainly exciting, but the Wings were unable to complete the task.
Two goals from Anthony Mantha and a two-point night from the returning Tyler Bertuzzi was not enough to win the game for the Wings. They came close, but no cigar.
Mike Green was able to get two assists to complete the trio of Wings skaters with two points on the game.
Jimmy Howard had five pucks fly past him before being pulled for Jonathan Bernier to take his place. Before he exited the game, Howard stopped a total of 19 shots and Bernier was able to save seven shots before he let in the overtime goal from Konecny.
Flyers get the better of the Wings in this one, winning 6-5 in extra time.

Worth Mentioning

The Flyers took the early lead within the first five minutes of the game on just their third shot of the game. Defenceman Shayne Gostisbehere rushed down the wing and took a clean pass from Nolan Patrick and put the puck neatly behind Jimmy Howard.
The lead didn’t last too long for the Flyers, as Gustav Nyquist nails the puck into the back of the net off a pass from Tyler Bertuzzi.
His first game back from a concussion, Bertuzzi makes an incredible play to tie up the game at one after 20 minutes of play.
A two-goal second period for the Flyers is really what changed the momentum in this game.
First, it was Travis Konecny lasering one past Howard on the man advantage.
Ericsson was unlucky to screen his own goaltender for the Flyers for Konecny to put his team up by one.
Almost immediately after that goal, the Flyers struck again and this time it was Scott Laughton on a 4-on-2 rush.
Absolutely stranded there, the Flyers were quick on the counterattack and it resulted in a goal to double their lead.
After 40 minutes, the Flyers thought it would be more fun to pile on the Wings with an offensive onslaught to start the third period.
Jakub Voracek scored off of a rebound from another Flyer and just spun on the ice into Howard to have even more fun.
The fun didn’t stop there either.
Howard had enough and Jonathan Bernier had to be called into the game after this goal. Gotta feel for the guy.
After that pelting, the game seemed all but completed, but the Wings had other ideas when the third period started.
Bertuzzi scored after a sleek pass by Larkin to narrow down the Flyers’ lead to just three goals.
Just as quick as the two Flyers goals came earlier in this period, the Wings had their own answer. Scoring another goal within seconds.
Thomas Vanek with the easy zone entry and shot to give some Wings fans much-deserved hope. With just a two-goal lead to overcome, the Red Wings certainly turned it on with more than 10 minutes remaining in the game.
That effort certainly paid off as Mantha tips in a Danny DeKeyser shot to keep the Flyers humble and carry just a one-goal deficit with many more minutes to come.
Minutes passed, hits were had, Flyers players were angry, but the Red Wings were able to make miracles happen and complete the comeback to tie it up with just seconds left in the entire game.
Mantha scores his second of the game and second tip of the game to send these teams to play extra hockey.
An unreal effort by the winger, he was able to make the perfect deflection and sent the puck over Hart’s shoulder.
But good things couldn’t last very long.
Shortly after the linesman dropped the puck, the Flyers were gifted with a solo opportunity and Konecny made no waste. Scoring a wraparound goal past Bernier and completing this game.
Flyers win 6-5 in OT over your Detroit Red Wings.

Final Thoughts

Score effects are a hell of a drug and the Red Wings had a heaping handful of it. After going down 5-1 in the second period, the Wings turned on the shots and absolutely pelted Hart with shots and shot attempts.
In the third period, the Wings had a 65.63 CF% at even-strength, a huge improvement after the past two periods.
Tyler Bertuzzi had a massive return, netting one goal and one assist in his first game back after his concussion.
It’s not everything, but Mike Green had a monster game. Playing a total of 24:09 TOI and was +26/-18 in 5v5 shot attempts.
The Red Wings showed some offensive capability, but you know when it’s a game against the Flyers, they’re able to just breakdown and let you run over them for a little bit.
