Noah Dobson’s name just doesn’t go away. Wherever you look, Detroit is linked to Dobson. But is there a match at 6th overall?
By now, most of us have the defenceman we want whether it’s Evan Bouchard, Quinn Hughes, Adam Boqvist, or the reaches in Ryan Merkley and Noah Dobson. It’s hard to fathom using the 6th pick on Dobson considering the players that will be available – even if the aforementioned defensemen are gone.

NHL CS RANKING

Projected to go 5th overall among North American skaters.

THE STATS

Dobson is a 6’3″ right-handed defender and totaled 69 points (17-52-69) in 67 games for the Memorial Cup winning Acadie-Bathurst of the QMJHL.
Most scouts have Dobson as the fifth-best defenceman in this draft; but don’t take that as a bad thing. This kid is good.

Many scouts say Dobson lead his team through playoffs and ultimately the Memorial Cup.

THE EYE TEST

Here’s a montage of Dobson highlights;

IS HE A MOTOR CITY MATCH?

Now comes the tricky part; where is an appropriate time to draft Dobson?
He might become a victim of being every team’s #2 guy on their list and just continue falling until he becomes a #1 guy on some team’s list. It seems this happens to one player each year.
I think the majority of Wings fans want Hughes or Bouchard (I’m not tipping my cap one way or the other) but don’t be disappointed if we take Dobson 6th overall. We can all take a lesson from last year and show some faith in our scouts and whichever player we take.
However, if it was me, I would take advantage of a team like the Rangers or Blackhawks who may be wanting to move up. You could squeeze a prospect or additional picks out of them and still get Dobson at 8 or 9 or even later.
There is going to be a lot of speculation leading up to June 22nd and Dobson is a very good player so keep that in mind if we take the 2018 Memorial Cup All-Star.
