In an interview given to Swedish website Hockeybladet, Red Wings Captain Henrik Zetterberg‘s agent Gunnar Svensson says that “he has not decided whether he will continue or not”. The latest from Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland is that he believes Zetterberg will play until he hears otherwise, but Zetterberg’s back has been ailing him for a couple seasons, even after his surgery. Svensson continues, “I just do not think he has decided yet. There has been some injury problem like the back. It is impossible to answer how it gets for it, you can not know as it is now. He simply has not decided.”
Paraphrasing, Svensson states that Zetterberg would not play in the SHL if he retired, that it’s Detroit or bust.
Zetterberg, or “Z”, is a fan favorite and has been captain of the Red Wings for 6 seasons. In his career, he has amassed 337 goals and 623 assists for 960 points in 1082 games all as a Red Wing. Zetterberg is a member of the Triple Gold Club, a Stanley Cup Champion, Conn Smythe Trophy winner, and one-time recipient of the King Clancy Trophy.
Losing Zetterberg would be a big blow to the organization on and off the ice but he must do what’s best for him and his family.
